MUIR scored a solid 36-run win over Union High in their schools cricket match in Graaff-Reinet at the weekend.
After winning the toss and batting first, Muir got off to a slow start when Dean Marais had Jack Tector trapped in front in the fifth over of the day.
The Union opening pair bowled well and had Muir on the back foot before a patient 45-run partnership between Michael Manefeldt and Darren Wates steadied the ship.
However, the visitors were under pressure at 84/6 just after the drinks break, but partnerships of 30 and 40 runs for the seventh and eighth wickets respectively proved vital in the Muir total. Xolela Daniels (30) and Laduma Tshaka (28) played important roles in helping Muir post a decent score of 161.
When Union batted, bowlers Dumisani Magala and Mlibo Jamjam struck in their first overs to reduce the hosts to 0/2 after three overs.
Union were well placed on 57/3 at drinks, but Muir returned after the break and gave nothing away in the field, soon reducing the home side to 76/5.
Union tried hard to break the stranglehold, but tight bowling and good fielding brought a run out and then Union lost their last three wickets for 10 runs, being dismissed for 126.
Branem Adams was the pick of the Muir bowlers, taking 4/34.
