IN a bumper day of good news for Nelson Mandela Bay hospitals, Health MEC Sicelo Gqobana has announced major construction and development plans for the city's hospitals, better disciplinary procedures and money for many new doctors.

"The MEC got right in three months what we were struggling to do for 16 months," the head of the Port Elizabeth Hospital Complex's clinical services, Dr Aydin Vehbi, said at a feedback meeting yesterday.

The major multimillion-rand refurbishment programme is being undertaken in conjunction with the Coega Development Corporation.

According to the Health Department's acting general manager, Mlamli Thuswa, construction will start on a new 250-bed hospital wing at Dora Nginza in December.
