Eskom price hike halved – but still a worry for many

01 March 2013

WHILE many expressed reservations, residents and businesses in Nelson Mandela Bay nonetheless welcomed a decision to rein in Eskom's annual tariff hikes to 8% – half of what the utility wanted – for the next five years.

Most said the announcement by the National Energy Regulator of SA (Nersa) yesterday was good news, but some felt it was still a cost pressure citizens and businesses did not need.

The hike is effective from April 1.

In his reaction, Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber chief executive Kevin Hustler was "grateful" that Nersa had listened to the combined voice of business, labour and civil society.

"The proposed tariffs were uncompetitive and unsustainable for our country as a whole, and they would have stifled economic growth and development into the future," Hustler said.
