NMMU1, Old Grey to battle it out

01 March 2013
Alvin Reeves

FIVE months of EP Super League cricket will come down to a single game when Maritime Motors Old Grey host Mecer NMMU1 at Freeplay Park tomorrow.

The winners of their clash will be crowned league champions even though NMMU1 still have a game to play against Rotatrim PECC on Sunday.

Both sides have maximum points from their matches so far. An Old Grey win tomorrow would result in them finishing unbeaten and a victory ahead of the students.

An NMMU triumph will mean they can still afford to lose against PECC because the by-laws state that if teams finish tied on the log, the criteria to separate them is first the number of wins, secondly who beat who in the head-to-head clash and finally, nett run-rate.

Defending champions NMMU1 will be at full strength this weekend, but face their biggest test of the summer in Old Grey.

NMMU1 are likely to employ a three-pronged spin attack in a bid to control Old Grey's attacking batting line-up on a pitch that is likelY to assist the turners.

Old Grey will be relying heavily on their top order to do the job for them and it would not be a bad ploy to bat first and try to exert some pressure on the students.

Having said that, if NMMU1 play to their potential, there are very few in the country who can match them.

The latest log is (excluding outstanding result cards):

1 Old Grey 48 (8), 2 (NMMU1) 42 (7), 3 NMMU2 26 (8), 4 Union 24 (8), 5 Uitenhage 18 (7), 6 PECC 13 (5), 7 Despatch 8 (5), 8 Gelvandale 7 (5), 9 Northville 7 (6), 10 Heatherbank 5 (7)

THE Tsitsikamma Lodge Superstriker competition standings going into the final weekend are:

1 B Thompson (Old Grey) 476, 2 E Potgieter (Old Grey) 317, 3 C Arnold (Union) 312, 4 T Young (Union) 292, 5 R Venter (Union) 289, 6 N Emmett (Old Grey) 271, 7 R Harris (Union) 267, 8 S McGilliwie (Old Grey) 261, 9 C Breetzke (Old Grey) 261, 10 E Moore (NMMU1) 256, 11 M Swanepoel (Uitenhage) 255, 12 S Adair (Old Grey) 252, 13 J Price (NMMU1) 239, 14 R Gelderbloem (Uitenhage) 231, 15 J Harker (Old Grey) 213, 16 R Kivido (Northville) 195, 17 G Auths (Old Grey) 190, 18 J Davidson (NMMU2) 185, 19 M Robey (Heatherbank) 185, 20 C Botha (Uitenhage) 184, 21 N Nabe (Uitenhage) 183, 22 M Venter (Despatch) 183, 23 R Delport (Union) 179, 24 D White (NMMU1) 173, 25 L Vaaltyn (NMMU1) 169.
