SOUTHERN Kings' rugby director Alan Solomons believes his team earned some "hard-earned" respect after their upset win over the Western Force.

It is a view shared by head coach Matt Sexton who says his team "played with courage and threw themselves around" in their opener.

"Our performance entitles us to some kind of respect after the way we played," Solomons said after his team made history by becoming the first team to win their debut Super Rugby match.

The Kings were an unknown quantity before beating the Force 22-10, but this will not be the case when they take to the field against the Sharks in Port Elizabeth next Saturday.
