Huge 'cross of hope' near bridge aims to halt suicides

A JEFFREYS Bay businessman's dream of erecting a gigantic "cross of hope" opposite the notorious Van Stadens "bridge of death" is about to be realised.

Publisher Robbie Hift said he had received a "vision from God" in December to build a huge cross on the top of the gorge at Van Stadens, from where it would be visible to anyone thinking about jumping to their death from the bridge.

The 14-metre cross will be attached to a massive steel framework 22m wide and 4m high, on which the letters "Jesus Loves You" will be affixed in perspex.
