Living hell for old folks

SCORES of residents of a Port Elizabeth retirement home are fearing for their futures after management dramatically increased rentals to keep the facility financially viable.

Residents of the Louis Dubb retirement home in Kabega Park, which forms part of the ACVV (Afrikaanse Christelike Vroue- vereniging), were up in arms this week after receiving notification that the facility had changed its rental system from one that charged according to a resident's income to one that will now charge according to the type of accommodation unit rented in the facility.

But the facility's management argue that the rental increases are critical to keep the facility going in the long term and cited a R1.5-million annual electricity bill as being among the reasons for the increases.
