East Cape rowers shine at champs

EASTERN Cape rowers excelled in several events when the SA Schools Championships were held on Roodeplaat Dam near Pretoria at the weekend.

On the opening day, Friday, many Eastern Cape rowers were represented in the A finals, meaning they were placed in the top eight crews in South Africa.

Carrie Warner, of Clarendon, won gold in the under-15 sculls event, with Emma Moses (DSG) coming fourth.

Robert Stevens (Grey) came fifth in the final of the u-15 single sculls and Ben Godfrey (Selborne) ended seventh.

In the u-16 single sculls, Jess King (Clarendon) raced to an impressive third place, while Oscar Hobson (Grey) claimed the silver medal in the boys' event. Another medal was added to the Clarendon tally by Amy Warner when she came third in the u-19 single sculls.

Most of the races on Saturday were the quads and again rowers from Grey, St Andrew's, Selborne, Zwartkops Rowing Club (ZRC), Clarendon and DSG showed their mettle by making the A finals.

The Grey u-15 quad, stroked by Stevens, came sixth, with the Clarendon u-16 quad, stroked by Henry, finishing fourth. The DSG u-15 double, stroked by Moses, came second, with their u-19 double, stroked by Cleary, finishing fourth.

The Grey second quad came second in the B final, with the Grey first four, stroked by Geach, coming fifth in the u-19 A final. ZRC again did well in the clubs division to come fourth in the u-19 men's quad.

Sunday's most prestigious race was the junior men's u-19 eight race which this year was won by St John's. St Benedict's won silver and KES were third, with St Andrew's missing out on the medals by finishing fourth. Grey came eighth in their first A final in the eights since 2007.

Boys: St Benedict's 338, St John's 240, St Alban's 232, KES 191, St Andrew's 107, Hilton 103, St Stithian's 98, Bishops 73, Parktown 70, Grey High 68, Selborne 46

Girls: St Mary's 235, St Andrew's 188, Holy Rosary 182, St Stithian's 103, Clarendon 98, Chisipite 59, Assumption 38, DSG 38, St Anne's 6

Co-ed schools: Somerset 123, St Dunstan's 65, Peterhouse 55, Bishop Bavin 22, Mondeor 17

Clubs: St George's 433, ZRC 101, VLC Watersports 72, PGRC 58, WCRA 52, Wemmer 33, Soweto 23
