Bloated Bhisho cut down to size

IN a drastic move to reduce overspending on staff salaries, the Eastern Cape government will cut the costs of personnel in all departments – except health – by 2% over the next three years.

Eastern Cape Finance MEC Phumulo Masualle announced this bold move to cut the bloated Bhisho administration in his budget speech at the provincial legislature yesterday.

The news comes as about 65% of the provincial government's R59.2-billion budget is earmarked for salaries for the 2013- 14 financial year.

In his budget speech last year, Masualle said the province was battling a bloated administration which had become increasingly unsustainable.
