AN Eastern Cape university basketball league has been initiated, aimed at strengthening the relationships between the universities and providing regular competition for the varsity players.
The EC USSA League will start in Grahamstown this weekend, with a series of matches in the Alec Mullins Hall at Rhodes.
The organisers are hoping the league will improve player development, create more interest in the sport at universities and draw the attention of the public.
"By providing this atmosphere of intense competition we will be raising the profile of university basketball, encouraging and supporting young players' interest in basketball and improving technical officials, referees and coaches in the sport," the organisers said.
"The university league will allow the universities in the Eastern Cape to compete against each other for the title of the best Eastern Cape university basketball team."
Teams from NMMU, Rhodes, Fort Hare and Walter Sisulu will compete in the league.
NMMU, the intervarsity champions, will start the tournament when they play Rhodes tomorrow.
