WITH the multimillion-rand upgrade of the impoverished suburb of Helenvale in Port Elizabeth nearing completion, various stakeholders – including the four schools in the area – are joining forces to beautify the area further.

The suburb, which is one of the most disadvantaged and crime- ridden areas in the metro, faces a huge backlog in waste management due to massive overcrowding, illegal dumping and the community's apathy towards the environment.

Councillor for the area, Nico du Plessis, said with various infrastructural upgrades under way in the area, including the R5-million upgrade of two parks and R38-million construction of the new Helenvale Thusong centre, the time hadcome to address waste management as a collective.

The projects all form part of the Helenvale Urban Renewal Programme (Hurp), which is expected to transform the look of the area, restore a sense of pride in the community and create jobs for the community which battles with high levels of unemployment and crime.
