NCEBA Faku, who resigned as regional chairman of the ANC in Nelson Mandela Bay on Saturday, was never far from controversy in the years since he became the country's first black mayor in 1995.
Whether it was question marks over the use of his mayoral discretionary fund; his call for The Herald to be burnt; allegations of his involvement with issues raised in the Kabuso Report; or his public statement that he would not support a second term for ANC president Jacob Zuma, the 57-year-old Faku was always a controversial figure.
He supported Tokyo Sexwale for the ANC presidency ahead of the Polokwane conference in 2007, while his decision not to support Zuma was based on the refusal of ANC senior structures, including the president, to support the decision of the regional executive committee (REC) to recall mayor Zanoxolo Wayile, his deputy Nancy Sihlwayi and Speaker Maria Hermans.
