CLAD in an ANC-branded golfshirt, a cap and his personal trademark flag over his shoulder, Nceba Faku boldly stepped up to the podium at the St Albans prison hall a year ago and told delegates Nelson Mandela Bay was due for another shake-up.
Up until then, this had only been the topic of hush-hush discussion at the party's regional headquarters, Florence Matomela House, and among members. It was vehemently denied in public.
But on April 27 when delegates gathered for the regional elective conference Faku, bolstered by the hope of re-election as chairman, set the ball rolling on what would become one of the most turbulent years in the city since democracy.
"The current situation of our deployment is a huge liability to the ANC in this region. It would be extremely suicidal for the ANC in this region to go into the 2014 elections with the current crop of our deployees untampered with," he declared.
With that, he sealed the fate of then arch-rival executive mayor Zanoxolo Wayile.
Yesterday, almost a year later, President Jacob Zuma's leadership gave the nod for Wayile and his deputy, Nancy Sihlwayi, to be sent packing.
