Spinners set up big Eastern Province win

A STRONG performance in the field saw Eastern Province (EP) coast to victory in their CSA Twenty20 cricket match against Easterns at the Pollock Oval at Grey High School yesterday.

With their spinners Brad Dolley, Jon-Jon Smuts and Colin Ackermann in control, EP effected three run outs as they dismissed Easterns for 105 with two balls remaining in the innings.

The spin trio all conceded less than 20 runs in their spells.

Dolley set the trend for the innings by taking the new ball and returning an analysis of two for 12 in four overs.

EP made no mistake in their run-chase despite losing Jon-Jon Smuts early on.

A second-wicket stand of 86 in 12 overs between Michael Price (46 not out) and Ackermann (33) took them to the verge of victory and then Kelly Smuts slammed a six and a four in three balls to secure the win with 4.3 overs remaining.

On Saturday, the teams shared the honours in the three-day encounter.

Set 307 to win, EP settled for a draw and ended the match on 123 for two, with Eddie Moore giving a solid performance at the top of the order, finishing on 79 not out.

South Western Districts (SWD) gave their three-day Provincial Challenge title chances a shot in the arm in Oudtshoorn when they defeated logleaders Free State by a massive 189 runs on Saturday.

Fast bowler Marcello Piedt was the hero for SWD, taking five for 57 to add to his first innings four-wicket haul as Free State, set 388 to win, were dismissed for 198.
