COLLEGIATE and Kingswood were crowned Eastern Province schools squash champions when they triumphed in the Dave Hodgson tournament in Grahamstown at the weekend.
Collegiate were rampant in the girls' section and qualified for the Top Schools tournament later this year by winning all their matches 6-0. They won 72 games in all and conceded only six. The team comprised Ashleigh Schepers, Hayley Ward, Nicki Butters, Opra de Klerk, Tayla O'Brien and Robynne Gilchrist.
Kingswood confirmed their reputation as one of the province's leading squash schools with a solid win over Grey High.
Although Kingswood won 5-1, all the matches were contested with determination and passion.
Kingswood were only able to seal their victory in the third last match of the evening, which Simon Wormald won 3-1. The remaining Kingswood members were Jethro Thorburn (captain), Daine Kruger, Vaughan Meyer, David Jones, Joshua Thorburn and Travis Whitehead (reserve). Over the last few years, Kingswood have had a talented team and have beaten the likes of Wynberg, Bishops, St John's, Grey College, Menlo Park, St Andrew's School, Paarl Boys High and Rondebosch.
They were also crowned the Makana and Districts first league champions last year.
Having participated in the Wynberg Stayers Festival last year, Kingswood were invited to the renowned FNB Squash Invitational Festival, hosted annually by St Andrew's School in Bloemfontein.
This allowed the team to gain further experience against some of the top schools players in South Africa and they went through the festival unbeaten.
