DF MALHERBE landed their first title in the third edition of the Albert House Karoo Challenge for High Schools at the Cradock Golf Club at the weekend.
The challenge saw nine schools with four players each competing for the title. Previous winners have been Grey High and Brandwag.
Saturday morning's play saw a betterball format being used. After the first day's play, DF Malherbe led Grey by a slender six shots.
In perfect weather on Sunday Grey and DF Malherbe went head to head in the foursomes format. DF's pairing of Mieke de Ridder and Stephan Smith (81) edged their Grey counterparts (Nyameku Heshu and Storm Akom) by two shots to put DFM eight ahead.
Jacques Smith and Rushane Peters (DFM) then matched the 76 of Grey's Andrew Booysen and Devon van Jaarsveld to give DFM victory by eight shots. Framesby collected the bronze, edging out Cradock and Despatch.
Cradock Golf Club president Johan de Jager said the annual event was a highlight on the golfing calendar and they were aiming to increase the numbers to at least 13 schools next year.
Event organiser Peter Baxter said the Challenge had grown. "Three different winners shows the province's golfing strength is spread among the schools."
