Two buses were also set alight in the morning mayhem.
The protesters said they wanted to sell parts from the buses as scrap metal so they could feed themselves and buy goods lost when their homes were razed.
Passengers, many of them bruised and shaken, told of their horror when they realised the violent crowd had turned on them.
