Valley Road still closed due to wind damage

14 March 2013
LOWER Valley Road, a main thoroughfare in Port Elizabeth, is closed and will remain so for at least 11 more days.

The road bypasses the historic Tramways building which is undergoing renovations as part of a Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA) project directed at reviving the precinct.

MBDA chief executive officer Pierre Voges said recent wind gusts had damaged one of the walls of the building, which now had no support and was in "a critical condition from a safety point of view" and that this had compelled the agency to close the road for safety reasons.

He said engineers were addressing the issue and he anticipated the situation would be rectified and the road re-opened in about 11 days. – Shaun Gillham
