AS a number of Nelson Mandela Bay schools face closure due to dwindling pupil numbers, a group of pupils from New Brighton high schools marched in protest yesterday against the redeployment of teachers in critical subjects.
Bay schools battling to stay afloat will know whether or not they will be shut down in three months, after Education MEC Mandla Makupula this week opened public consultations.
Pupil numbers in the city's township schools have been on a downward spiral, necessitating the movement of teachers deemed in excess, leaving some with little option but to shut down.
This as pupils from Thubelihle High School – mostly in matric with a few grades 10 and 11 pupils present – took to the streets yesterday, complaining that they were forced to take tourism as a subject in place of accounting.
