Advocate injected with unknown substance in assault

14 March 2013
A report has not been made to the police about an attack on advocate Jaap Cilliers SC outside the High Court in Pretoria, police said on Thursday (14/03/2013).

Warrant Officer Ann Poortman, of the Pretoria police station, said she did not have much detail about the attack because no formal complaint had been made.

"No case was reported to us. We understand he [Cilliers] is in hospital. Maybe the report will be done at some [later] stage,” said Poortman.

"For the police to investigate, a report has to be laid first,” she said.

The Beeld newspaper reported on Thursday that Cilliers, whose clients have included Dr Wouter Basson, Jackie Selebi and the Waterkloof four, was injected with an unknown substance outside the Pretoria court.

He was walking out of court on Wednesday after concluding a civil case.

The newspaper reported that Cilliers sensed someone rush up to him from behind, then felt a sharp sensation in his buttock.

He was taken to a doctor, who confirmed that he had been injected with an unknown substance.

Cilliers was taken to a Pretoria hospital for blood tests, in an attempt to establish the nature of the substance. - Sapa
