Cunningham could be freed today if plea deal accepted

15 March 2013

BRENT Cunningham, who allegedly assaulted his ex-girlfriend and two friends in December, could be released from prison today if the Port Elizabeth court accepts a plea agreement between the defence and the state.

Cunningham, 21, has been in jail for almost three months. He was denied bail on February 7 after the court ruled he was a danger to society.

Due to the massive public outrage triggered by the case, the court also feared for his safety should he be released from custody.

Today, Cunningham is expected to plead guilty to assaulting former girlfriend Shireen Ballan, 36, and two friends in Morningside.

If the defence's part of the deal is accepted by the court, he could serve a sentence outside of prison.
