AS incoming mayor, 81-year-old Ben Fihla, and his deputy, Chippa Ngcolomba, prepare to be sworn in at a special council meeting today, the veteran has revealed his priorities.

Anxious to begin the huge task of stabilising a metro that has been blighted by nearly two years of political infighting, Fihla said he was well aware of the challenges ahead.

The ANC veteran said his full plans would be revealed later, when he had settled in.

But, in the meantime, he had identified serious problems in education, health and housing delivery.

In an interview with The Herald yesterday, Fihla assured residents that they were in good hands as he has spent more than 60 years in politics.
