Limpopo player clinches EP title

PAUL de Beer survived a nervous final round start to clinch the 54-hole Cleveland Golf Eastern Province Strokeplay title at Humewood yesterday.

De Beer carded a third round two-over 74 to add to his two 70s on Saturday to win the coveted title by two strokes on an aggregate 216.

But the 20-year-old from Kameeldoring Golf Club in Potgietersus, Limpopo, had to steady himself after a start which brought the field close to him.

De Beer started yesterday six shots ahead of his nearest rival Zander Lombard (Woodhill) and eight in front of Tristen Strydom (Pretoria CC).

But a double drop on the par four second and consecutive bogeys on three, four and five saw him slip back to one-over for the tournament.

However, a birdie at nine and two more on the 14th and 15th saw him home safely.

"It's great to get the win. Yesterday (in strong wind) was very tough but I played really well," he said.

Nigel's Christiaan Bezuidenhout clinched second spot, while Mossel Bay's Andrew Light took third. Naldo Claassen was the best of the EP players.
