ANC Nelson Mandela Bay secretary Zandisile Qupe's vehicle was set alight last night while parked outside a Zwide radio station.

But the arson attempt was foiled by bystanders who quickly extinguished the fire before it caused any substantial damage.

Qupe, who was unharmed, is the regional ANC's second in command and one of the party leaders instrumental in getting outgoing mayor Zanoxolo Wayile fired by President Jacob Zuma last week.

The attack happened at about 8pm, when an unidentified person hurled a tyre under Qupe's Toyota Corolla, doused the vehicle with petrol and set the tyre alight while Qupe was inside the KQFM building.
