THE former owner of a large Port Elizabeth cab company, who used his business as a front to deal in drugs, narrowly avoided a maximum sentence of life in prison or a fine of R100-million yesterday after his defence attorney cut a deal with the state.
Warren Fick, 39, the owner of Omega Cabs at the time of the offence, was convicted in the Port Elizabeth Regional Court alongside his drivers, Demitri Da Silva, 41, and Shane Plaatjies, 43, who sold the drugs to passengers and others.
Fick, from Newton Park, has since sold Omega Cabs. He was sentenced to an effective eight years in prison, while Da Silva and Plaatjies, both of Gelvandale, will each serve six years behind bars.
