Sexwale urges efficient spending

HUMAN Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale yesterday slammed government departments and municipalities for failing to spend their budgets efficiently.

Non-spending, he said, was hampering efforts to wipe out the apartheid legacy of residential segregation based on race.

Sexwale was speaking at the launch of a human settlements development degree at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU). The four-year course is to be offered from next year.

"It is totally unacceptable to have unspent funds provided by the national department to provinces or municipalities only for such funds to be taken back." He warned, however, that this was not to encourage municipalities to spend recklessly to avoid having funds sent back to national government.
