Pretoria Zoo staff were on Wednesday (20/03/2013) still looking for a black mamba that escaped from its enclosure.
"We would like to reassure our visitors that the missing snake poses little threat to the safety of the public,” the zoo said on its website.
"We have staff continually monitoring the area. In the unlikely event that you do spot the snake, please inform any of our staff immediately.” Staff realised last week that the snake’s terrarium was empty.
The zoo’s marketing manager Craig Allenby told Beeld newspaper on Tuesday that the area was cordoned off for two days while staff hunted for the snake.
"We suspect the snake could have slithered into the roof, but we can’t get in there because of the angle and the narrow gap,” he was quoted as saying.
He said there was no need for hysteria as the mamba was in all likelihood preparing for hibernation. On Wednesday the zoo said it could only comment after 8.30am. - Sapa
