Walmer fire threatens homes

22 March 2013
Shaun Gillham

WALMER residents rallied together to fight an extensive blaze which broke out in the Settlers Park nature reserve in the Baakens Valley yesterday afternoon.

This came as stretched Nelson Mandela Bay firefighters fought 10 bush fires across the greater Bay area, and as the N2 freeway and R102 roads at Mondplaas near Jeffreys Bay were briefly closed as fire fighters from the Cacadu District Municipality fought bush fires there.

All the fires were extinguished by last night.

In the face of strong south- westerly winds, the Settlers Park fire appeared to start in the vicinity of the First Walmer Scout Group Hall in Fordyce Road and spread towards the Port Elizabeth Harbour.
