NEW MAYOR NAMES HIS PRIORITIES

OOM Ben Fihla, are health and education really municipal functions? More of the same!

ALEC

I HAVE read the story about what the new mayor is going to do. I intend keeping this editorial to measure his performance. Watch this space.

REPLIES TO READERS' COMMENTS

RATEPAYER, please do not insult Winston Churchill or Jan Smuts (both world statesmen) by comparing them with anyone (other than Nelson Mandela).

MAX, when Nceba Faku was newly elected as mayor a couple of business owners had a meeting with him to make our airport an international airport. Instead he thought opening a tyre business was more important.

GARY N

DENNY, South Africa is definitely run by morons masquerading as politicians, but what on earth have Vorster, Verwoerd and Malan got to do with an apparently loudmouth nursing sister? If you did a little research you will find that South Africa in the days of the three men you name had a world class health system with our medical degrees recognised all over the galaxy. Today no civilised country accepts South African medical qualifications.

MBOWENI SPEAKS SENSE

IF any parent knows someone with children in the townships and is passionate about education, it's a must that they are given the article about Tito Mboweni to be read on education of their children in yesterday's Herald.

VICIOUS PET CIRCLE CONTINUES

PEOPLE are opening their gates so their dogs can "get lost"! You all know who you are. Animal Welfare has no other option but to put them down. Where must they all be kept? So stop the breeding, the vicious circle will just continue!

START WITH MISSING FUNDS

IN an extravagant Herald advert MEC Mandla Makupula asks for input. How about starting with the hundreds of millions noted by the auditor-general to be missing from his department? It's the same year after year.

POLITICAL UNREST IN BAY

IT is disturbing to read that there is a clique of hooligans who are disturbed and frustrated by ANC intervention in the metro. Hands off our leaders, in particular our regional secretary. These people must be arrested. These are thugs. Be strong, Zandisile Qupe. I condemn this action.

WARD 52

THE vehicle of an ANC member is set alight. Why? The majority voted ANC. It's just plain hooliganism. This country is out of control.

ANCYL REAPS WHAT IT SOWED

ANCYL: the ANC and women's league did nothing when Julius Malema and co were "loud", unruly and rude. Varsities and SABC were his mountain tops. Why was this behaviour allowed? What you sow you will reap.

ALCOHOL ABUSE COSTING BILLIONS

CLOSE all the shebeens. Make alcohol sales between 1pm on Saturday until 9am on Monday a no-no again. No advertisements for alcohol. Moving the drinking age from 18 to 21: age is not relevant, availability is!

ARE KHOISAN LEADERS BEING PAID?

I SEE the Khoisan have kings and chiefs like the Xhosa and Zulu, etc. Are they getting the same allowance as traditional leaders from the government?

DON'T NEED PORN CHANNELS

TOP TV's attempt to air porn is nothing but a last ditch attempt to save an ailing broadcaster. Is this the best it could come up with? Better still, what does that insinuate about our nation? Please let's all boycott Top TV including sponsors and advertisers. No more.

ANONYMOUS

THE Herald March 19: "Children don't need extra porn source". Why? Have the kiddies enough at the moment? A further headline reads "Religious leaders ready to boycott Top TV porn channels". How unusual for these folk to consider such drastic action!

POWER SURGE AGAIN AT BUFFELSFONTEIN

POWER surge once again at Buffelsfontein retirement village. This time I lost my TV, music centre, radio clock and kettle. All these items cannot be repaired. Every time our loss is bigger. Since becoming state pensioners, one cannot afford householders insurance anymore. Who do I contact for compensation? Any advice please.

ZERO TOLERANCE ON CRIME? NO WAYS

ASHLEY Rudd is a serial criminal and once again our "magistrates" have let us down. Two years and he's out in half that time. Zero tolerance on crime? Oh! I forgot. Jacob Zuma thinks crime is just a perception in South Africa.

APPOINT EXPERIENCED PEOPLE

YOU wouldn't ask an airline steward to fly the plane at the expense of a career pilot so why did Riah Phiyega get the nod ahead of a career policeman? Another dumb selection by Jacob Zuma and his incompetent henchmen. Suffer the South African citizen.

SPLASH FESTIVAL FIASCO

THE NMBM should just apologise for the Splash bungle and rather invest the R1-million into upcoming events that attract visitors to the city instead of wasting it on a half job that's going to be slapped together in a week. There is a lot going on that requires NMBM backing to become bigger annual attractions.

VETERANS MEDICAL AID DISFUNCTIONAL

IS there any government department that actually functions correctly? The military veterans medical aid: not one application processed. Put these people on the SABC board, just as useless.

Gary N raises an interesting point re the airport. So the proposal to make it international wasn't accepted, yet all references to P.E.'s airport now include the word "international". This must be something of a rather embarrassing joke by now.
