PUPILS at Little Flower Primary School in Uitenhage can breathe easy after participating in an initiative to remove a hazardous illegal dumpsite behind the school premises last week with the help of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality.
The school's natural science teacher, Leocadia Adams, said pupils had to walk through the dumpsite, which had been piling up over several years.
"The children would often get diarrhoea because of all of the bacteria in the dumpsite. Also, because of the huge piles of dirt, a few pupils were victims of crime ... And we had a problem with rats in the past," Adams said.
