THE Provincial Hospital's state-of-the- art in-patient haematology ward admitted five patients on its first day yesterday, symbolising the coming to fruition of a three-year dream by a Port Elizabeth doctor and his team.
The R20-million Aloe Igazi Ward in Port Elizabeth has not been fully functional despite its official opening more than a year ago, first because of staff shortages and then because of a labour dispute with a general worker.
But finally yesterday they were able to admit patients, including the first stem cell transplant patient from East London.
"For us it really is a dream come true," unit head Dr Neil Littleton said.
