NELSON Mandela Bay's Red Location Museum hosts National Book Week early next month.
Renowned South African authors and celebrities are expected to descend on the metro to hold literacy workshops, storytelling and motivational talks. The event, to be held from September 5 to 7, is aimed at promoting a culture of reading and writing. The authors and celebrities expected to attend are Zakes Mda, Deon Meyer, Chad Saaiman, Gcina Mhlophe, Bonnie Henna and Zolani Mkiva.
The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has partnered with the Eastern Cape Department of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture and the South African Book Development Council (SABDC) to host the event. This year's theme for the event is "The Books of Our Lives".
Some of the activities lined up include book discussions, a word-a-thon and specialised workshops by renowned authors, family literacy workshops, motivational talks, storytelling, reading tents and a praise-singing workshop by celebrities.
Port Elizabeth mayor Ben Fihla said: "Reading, as part of the important process of educating our youth, remains crucial if we would like to break the back of poverty, unemployment and inequality.
"I hope that everybody will have fun and enjoy the stimulating activities planned."
Entrance to National Book Week programmes is free.
