A TRIO of Eastern Province teenagers are gearing up for a new challenge when they compete in the world junior swimming championships, starting in Dubai on Monday.
Given South Africa's success in recent world events, the country's next generation will be keen to impress in Dubai. Among them will be EP swimmers Chris Reid, and Uitenhage twins, Alard and Alaric Basson, all aged 17.
South Africa will be fielding a team of 18 competitors, who all had to swim qualifying times.
Alard is swimming in the 200m butterfly, 400m individual medley and the relays; breaststroke ace Alaric will compete in the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke – which is his speciality – and the relays; and Reid will swim in the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke, 200m butterfly, 200m and 400m individual medley, the 200m freestyle and the relays.
