THE Eastern Province Kings enter this evening's Currie Cup First Division rugby match against the Griffons knowing that a victory at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium is imperative to keep their season's hopes alive.
The injury-time loss to the table-topping Pumas in Nelspruit last week means the Kings have little chance of overhauling the logleaders. But a bonus-point win tonight would keep the fourth-placed Kings on track for second place and a home semifinal in the play-offs.
As matters stand, the Pumas have a 10-point lead at the top, but only four points separate the second-placed SWD Eagles (27 points), Leopards (26 points) and Kings (23 points) after eight matches.
Failure to finish second could also put a spanner in the works of mooted plans by SA Rugby to enlarge the Premier Division to accommodate the Kings and Pumas next year.
