A FORMER Port Elizabeth doctor is the new head of the Eastern Cape Health Department, permanently filling a post left vacant by Dr Siva Pillay nine months ago.
Thobile Mbengashe, 62, who heads the HIV/Aids directorate at the national Health Department, takes over from acting head Mahlubandile Qwase on September 1.
Health MEC Sicelo Gqobana said Mbengashe was "well versed" in the challenges plaguing the department.
"I'm ecstatic that he has agreed to join us," Gqobana said.
