I WOULD like defend the school principal mentioned in your article regarding the child pornography case ("Child porn suspect linked to EC schools", August 22).
I have known this man for many years, taught with him and managed sports teams with him, and as a result he has been a friend to my family for many years.
He is particularly close to my 16-year-old son as a mentor, someone he looks up to and who has known him since he was six!
According to your article, the teacher is supposedly part of some porn ring which could not be further from the truth! Being charged with possession of child pornography and being part of a porn ring are two very different things, and this is my point. At this stage he is accused of buying one DVD which is not considered porn at all as it was actually purchased through Amazon.com and is still on its website.
The DVD was ordered from Amazon and it purchased it through the Canadian company now under investigation for porn, and by association he has now been implicated.
He is one of the most amazing teachers and all the thousands of pupils all over South Africa who have had the privilege of being taught by him will all agree that he had some influence over their education.
I do not think that I know a man with such high morals, a deep sense of compassion for mankind and a faith in God which will surely stand up to the tide of these unjust and cruel accusations.
To all the staff and pupils who know this wonderful man, please do not believe what you have heard, trust in the man who you once knew and stand by his side rather than assume his guilt.
