TWO entrepreneurs will represent Port Elizabeth in the SAfm Wild Card round of this year's Engen Pitch & Polish competition.
Roland Jordaan and Teresa Cox entered the online competition and are in Johannesburg where they will pitch their business ideas on live radio today. They will go up against another contestant for a spot in the semifinals.
The Engen Pitch & Polish competition was started four years ago to combat the high unemployment rate in South Africa. The aim is for entrepreneurs to develop their business ideas to succeed.
Project manager Bronwyn Echardt said opening up the competition online gave more people an opportunity to enter.
The aim of the competition is also to help communities and entrepreneurs polish their business pitch.
Jordaan said: "This provides great exposure for me and it could also mean great things for the Eastern Cape. Through this we will also be able to create jobs."
The two wildcard entrants from Port Elizabeth both entered the online competition which ran parallel to the Pitch & Polish national workshops.
The best ideas were chosen and entrepreneurs were required to pitch their ideas on live radio.
Jordaan's Ya' Lapa Coffee business will process, label and distribute coffee, exclusively harvested in Africa, with the aim of creating employment in rural Eastern Cape areas. "When we did our research, we realised that the coffee market was already viable and established.
"Coffee is the second largest traded commodity in the world; it is a multi-billion rand business. It is Africa's gold. Our longterm goal is to have products proudly and uniquely from the Eastern Cape."
Cox started her 24-hour chauffeur taxi business in December and provides door-to-door service to people coming to Port Elizabeth on business.
Her business is called UT Chauffeur Taxi Service.
She said: "I found it difficult to get funding because I am new in the industry and not that established. Through this competition I will be able to access funding and the mentorship and training will help my business to grow."
Listeners can tune in to SAfm today from 10.45am for the live business pitches. The winner of this round will go through to the semifinals and compete against seven other contestants.
