THE South African Heritage Resources Agency (Sahra) is on a mission to find a way to protect and promote the underwater cultural heritage along Port Elizabeth's coast.
Among the topics discussed at a recent awareness campaign was the need for heritage inspectors and the conservation of the area's shipwreck.
Sahra officials Shaun Berry – manager of the agency's Maritime Underwater Cultural Heritage (Much) – and heritage officer Sophie Winton met with stakeholders at the Noordhoek Ski Boat Club at the weekend where they discussed forming a conservancy group.
"We want people on the ground to be our eyes and ears. South Africa has an extensive maritime history and numerous indigenous sites relating to water bodies," Berry said. – Shaanaaz de Jager
