THE Legal Resources Centre (LRC) has filed a second urgent application with the Mthatha High Court to compel the Department of Basic Education to supply much- needed furniture to schools in the province.
This after the department failed to comply with a court order granted in November last year ordering the department to do an audit of needs and to see to the furniture requirements of all schools in the province.
While the key applicants in that court order – Mpimbo, Mbananga and Sirhudlwini schools – got their furniture this year, hundreds of other schools are still waiting.
The LRC is now also asking the court to hold the department in contempt of court and to order it to do a credible audit of schools' furniture needs as the one conducted earlier was "riddled with gross irregularities and excludes hundreds of schools".
