A DATING website for HIV-positive people has become so popular it recently crashed as too many people were trying to access it at the same time.
The Positive Connection, founded by Gauteng- based Ben Sassman, has 267 members, 39 of them from the Eastern Cape.
Sassman, who is not infected with HIV and is a married father of three, said he had not expected the website – which he started 10 years ago – to become so popular.
"I had 39000 members when the site crashed [three months ago] and now they are all reregistering one by one," he said.
Although initially intended to be a dating site, some – like Soweto-based Vusi, in his 40s, – have found other uses for it.
Vusi, who did not want his surname published, has a consulting business for HIV/Aids training and other skills and said he had met men and women on the site. "I chatted to a Ugandan woman who lived in the Eastern Cape and now lives in the US.
"I also met a nurse who has become a partner in my [consulting] business," he said.
