THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is in a race against time to have the Newton Park swimming pool fully operational by December after securing about R2-million needed to fix the broken tiles in the pool.
The pool, which has been closed since July, is being technically assessed to find out what caused its tiles to break.
The damage to the pool led to one of the country's biggest national swimming competitions, the Aquabears Swimming Gala – which was meant to be held this month – being cancelled for the first time in 42 years. The gala attracts more than 500 young swimmers from across South Africa.
