A CONTROVERSIAL social housing project earmarked for Mount Croix has people fuming.
Residents fear the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality project for about 200 units will limit their public open spaces and place pressure on the neighbouring schools.
Two- to four-storey units are planned for the site and those in stable employment who earn between R2500 and R7500 a month will qualify.
Erica Girls' Primary School principal Keith McCrindle said petitions sent to parents last Thursday were returned the next day with "80%" of the parents petitioning against rezoning of the area.
McCrindle said the rezoning of plots meant the school would no longer be able to serve the wider Port Elizabeth community, as it now does.
