SO often there are articles in our local newspapers, magazines or even items on television encouraging improvement to the tourist industry in our country. Often, too, these adverts are released directly from government.
This strikes me as rather funny. There are other countries with more beautiful sunny beaches than we have.
There are other countries that have just as many and far more interesting tourist attractions than South Africa does. So what is the real attraction here?
It is our animal wildlife. It is to see the lion, the elephant and the rhinoceros roaming in their natural habitat that creates the biggest attraction for foreign tourists.
The government wants to attract tourists to our country, but it is not prepared to offer protection to our biggest attractions. Once the last rhino and elephant have been killed, and the last lion has been canned, what will there be left to attract tourists then?
