SOUTH African universities are failing their students by not focusing as much on teaching and learning as they do on academic research, Council for Higher Education chief executive Ahmed Essop said.
Essop was the guest speaker at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University's annual Research, Teaching and Engagement awards, where he commended the university for celebrating its excellentlecturers.
The annual awards, which have become a highlight on the university calendar, honour the achievements of top academics in the fields of research, teaching, the creative and performing arts, innovation and engagement.
A total of 42 lecturers were honoured for their work at the glitzy function at the Boardwalk Convention Centre last night – from seasoned staffers to "emerging" ones beginning their teaching careers
