DOCTORS at the Port Elizabeth and East London hospital complexes are heading for a major showdown with the provincial Health Department.
Emergency meetings were held at the PE Hospital Complex yesterday as doctors prepare to take the department on over a five-year delay in implementing a plan that would see them being promoted according to their experience and expertise, and reward them for above-average performance.
On Wednesday, 100 doctors and specialists at the centre each filed a grievance against the department in a show of solidarity.
Besides their salary woes, doctors serving the public health sector in the province already have to contend with dire staff and equipment shortages.
