IN response to the letter by Mark Derry, rector of St Francis Xavier Anglican Church ("Ministers no longer given patient details", September 9), Netcare Greenacres Hospital acknowledges and values the importance of spiritual support to our patients. We have always been accommodating in providing clergymen with a daily list of patients belonging to a particular faith.
However, we are in fact prevented by law from disclosing any patient information to a third party as it constitutes a breach of patient's confidentiality.
Clergymen remain welcome in our facility, and we want to encourage our patients and their families to inform their religious leaders should they want to be visited. We sincerely apologise for the way in which Derry was treated by the receptionist and will address the matter accordingly.
We understand the frustration you might experience due to this change, but thank you for understanding that the information relating to a patient's health status, treatment or stay in a Netcare facility remains private.
Adéle Kennedy, marketing manager, Netcare Greenacres Hospital
