FORMER SAB League side Morning Stars are gearing up for their first campaign in the Safa Eastern Cape Second Division league.
The Kwazakhele-based outfit, owned by Nelson Mandela Bay deputy mayor Chippa Ngcolomba, recently bought the status of Bay Stars who competed in the province's semi-professional league last season.
Morning Stars finished fourth in the SAB regional league last season and aim to be promoted to the National First Division (NFD) in the 2014-15 season.
Stars club manager Simphiwe Sijaji said the team had already begun their preparation for the start of the new season, although the date had still not been confirmed by Safa.
"The team started with preparations at the beginning of last month and our aim is to identify talent from the township. People will be surprised with the talent we've identified in our townships
"Training sessions are taking place during the week and over the weekends we play friendly matches.
"We intend to change the Bay Stars name and use Morning Stars in the second division, and as a club we've already forwarded our name-change application to Safa and are waiting for their response.
"As we all know, to change the name of the club with Safa, we have to follow some processes and using Morning Stars is our identity and the people from the township will be able to identify their home team in the second division league."
Stars will continue to use Zwide Stadium as their home ground.
"We cannot talk about former Bay Stars players as the club [Morning Stars] only purchased the status of Bay Stars, not their players.
"We've decided to go for new talent, and we can mention that the teams from the townships are supporting the initiative of scouting local players and they have released a few players to Morning Stars."
Sijaji said the team had a strong technical staff who knew the history of the club.
A squad of 24 players has been selected to drive the team to the Premier Soccer League level in the 2014-15 season.
"It may seem that we're too ambitious, but everything is achievable," he said.
"We will be participating in the second division campaign for the people of the Nelson Mandela metro and we will make them proud."
Stars recently released one of their central defenders, Masixole Nkewana, to the East London-based NFD league side, Blackburn Rovers, for their 2013-14 campaign.
Stars will play a friendly against Garden Route side Juventus in Jeffreys Bay tomorrow.
