NOT even US President Barack Obama would be able to fix problems in the Eastern Cape Department of Health. So said health department spokesman Sizwe Kupelo when responding to a report from a coalition that highlights serious problems in the province's public health services.
The coalition is made up of health and human- rights advocacy organisations Section 27, the Treatment Action Campaign, Rural Health Advocacy Project, the Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa, the Rural Doctors' Association of South Africa, Junior Doctors' Association of South Africa, and concerned physicians from Port Elizabeth under the banner of the Igazi Foundation.
Kupelo said the report was a gross exaggeration of the situation in the province's health system.
"There is nothing new in the report. We know everything that they say and we have been working to fix it," he said.
