A DAMNING report tabled in the Eastern Cape legislature yesterday revealed a crumbling police force, with malfunctioning emergency call centres and response units across the province.
It also revealed critical shortages of police vehicles, dilapidated buildings, old radio systems, lack of generators and emergency call centre equipment that is not operational.
Staff shortages, poor morale and lack of training compounded the problems. Some of the 10111 call centres were "completely dysfunctional" and newly built or partially built call centres across the province were either not being used or not being completed.
The report, tabled by the provincial safety and security portfolio committee, pointed to major problems at all seven 10111 emergency call centres and flying squad units in the Eastern Cape.
