SOUTH African-produced giant avocados have taken the European market by storm.
The "Avozilla", five times bigger than the average avocado – and arguably the world's largest – weighs 1.3kg.
It is produced by Westfalia Fruit Estate in Limpopo, who say it is not genetically modified or treated with hormones. The enormous avos sell for £3 (about R47) each.
The Guardian newspaper reported recently that a fruit importer had sold the extraordinary fruit to satisfy UK avocado needs. Avocado sales had increased by 9% since 2011 with 240000 tons exported to Europe last year. – Philani Nombembe
